Kokon
2020

The videowork was made during the first lockdown during the worldwide Covid-19-pandemic situation. In a poetic and fragmentary way, Kokon deals with the question of the extent to which the pandemic situation also represents a transgressive moment. KOKON establishes an analogy between the viral, the mutated and the identitarian, thus questioning familiar categories of the self and the other. What do viruses tell us about excess and instability, what do they tell us about dependencies and vulnerabilities, contamination and collaboration? What do they tell us about the relationality of the familiar and the unfamiliar? The spread of Sars-Cov2 and the simultaneous emergence of mouth-nose masks, which have not yet been normalized here, meant and means for me a productive disruption, a visible intervention in the coding mechanisms of the face. The masked face can be understood less as the expressive surface of an individual than as the visualization of a social condition: as a proverbial collective loss of face, as a crisis of classification. The fearful and unfamiliar is all the more fearful and unfamiliar the closer it gets to us. Accordingly, the defense strategy is based on creating distance from the dreaded.
